All you need to know about the recent spread of scabies

Many students throughout the Netherlands have been diagnosed with scabies. Similarly in Norway southern hospital, a patient was admitted into hospital with a confirmed case of scabies. Subsequently, ten staff from the same hospital became infected.

Dr Vel, a long serving staff in the hospital said he thinks this outbreak raises serious questions about cleaning.

“Scabies is very easily spread through contact with people and beds”

“Hospital should be making sure the staffs are cleaning very well to help stop spreading of conditions such as this.

“Health and safety control must be very good, and I think the hospital should be looking into this.

“It’s very important that bed linen is cleaned and washed very well also, to help prevent spread of this.

Scabies is caused by tiny parasitic mites that hideaway into the skin and feed on fluids to live and reproduce. Symptoms of scabies include intense itching and a pimple-like rash. The most commonly affected areas are between the wrists, fingers, elbows, chest, navel, thigh, abdomen, buttocks, genitals, forearms, feet and the ankles.

Scabies is highly infectious but easy to treat.
