The world health organisation (WHO) released a list of diseases that has a potential of becoming a global pandemic in future of which disease “X” was included.  This report is contained in the 2018 edition of the organization’s annual review of the Blueprint list of priority diseases .The document stipulated that Disease “X” signifies the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease.

“Disease “X” isn’t the name of a mysterious new disease that you’ve never heard of. Rather, Disease “X” represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease”. WHO

In previous years the list has been confined to known killers such as Lassa fever, which Nigeria is currently fighting and Ebola, between 2014 and 2016 killed 11,325 people in an epidemic in West Africa (currently re-emerged in DRC).

The West African Ebola outbreak of 2014 and the current outbreak in DRC ,demonstrated how the world is unprepared not only to combat a public health emergency, but also how an old disease that has fallen off the radar can suddenly re-emerge, spread rapidly and cause serious damage.

WHO therefore recommends strengthening of health system, which includes: more laboratories to diagnose diseases, better use of technology, more trained health worker because nobody knows where the next disease pandemic will emerge from?
